It also helps to justify the slower pace of the game, which was the target of many older Doom fans' criticism. Subtle background themes that are designed to destabilize your sense of security are accompanied by the creak of stressed metal, the hiss of steam from broken pipes and odd noises from the shadows that instill a sense of dread which enhances the impact of monster-in-a-closet style scares when they are deployed. A good horror game needs good sound design, and Doom 3 fortunately has this in spades. It's also important to note that Doom 3 is also very much a horror game. No sooner does he check in with his new superior and get his first assignment, a mysterious force sweeps through the base, transforming many of the inhabitants into flesh-eating zombies and summoning up ghoulish and horrific extra-dimensional monsters that quickly set about eradicating the survivors. The ever-nameless protagonist, lovingly dubbed 'Doomguy' by the franchise's fans, arrives on Mars in the opening cinematic, reassigned to the Union Aerospace Corporation's chief research outpost for an implied failure to follow orders. When it comes to story, Doom 3 keeps it simple. That said, Doom 3 is more about looking and screaming than it is about running and gunning. Personally, I had very little experience with FPS games to go on when I first played it, and so found it fun and generally entertaining, unshackled as I was by the trap of nostalgia. To most long-time fans however, it was a stinging disappointment, a botch-job that should've been consigned to the shadows that permeate its dark sci-fi corridors. For many, Doom 3 was a triumphal return of the grandfather of first-person shooters. Whether or not it succeeded is something you'll get differing opinions on depending who you ask. Its release was meant to bring Doom into the 21st century a gore-splattered resurrection fueled by id Tech 4, an engine so powerful that it would be years before computers that could run it at full capacity would be released. Doom 3 is the third installment in the award-winning Doom franchise.
